PRIC bio-based polyesters: from development to market opportunities

SUMMARY OF THE INTERVENTION

For more than ten years, ITERG has devoted part of its research efforts to developing a range of bio-based macromolecules called estolides, grouped under the generic name PRIC. These oligomers, obtained through polycondensation reactions, have demonstrated significant potential following evaluations conducted with industrial partners across various sectors, thereby confirming the chosen strategic direction.

The main strength of this product line lies in its high versatility, which allows it to meet a wide range of technical requirements. Continuous innovation has led to the development of various functionalities, viscosities, and physicochemical properties. Estolides incorporating alcohol, acid, isocyanate, and, more recently, acrylate groups have been designed for use as ingredients, prepolymers, or additives.

To date, approximately 20 formulations have been internally validated by ITERG.
Technical, economic, and environmental assessments have enabled better market positioning, and several products are now being manufactured on ton. These advances confirm the industrial relevance of these bio-based materials.
